100 years of SSC Napoli. A city, its people and the football club that belongs to them.
Napoli 100 is a black-and-white photographic Edition by Naples-based photographer and lifelong supporter Alessandro Cangiano, documenting the city’s celebrations of SSC Napoli’s centenary.
Photographed from within the crowds and alongside supporters on the streets of Naples, Cangiano’s images capture an extraordinary display of passion, belonging and collective identity.
There is an almost religious intensity to the photographs. Smoke, banners, raised arms and packed streets transform the occasion into something resembling a procession, with football providing the shared faith.
Running through the celebrations is a powerful message: Napoli è della gente – Napoli belongs to the people.
The ultras, who funded the celebrations themselves, also displayed banners declaring No Business, expressing their opposition to the increasing commercialisation of football.
For a city whose club faced bankruptcy in 2004, the centenary carries particular significance.
Both a celebration of 100 years of SSC Napoli and a reminder of who the game belongs to, Napoli 100 is a striking photographic record of football, community and identity.
