In the echoing corridors of the iconic San Siro stadium, where passion reverberates with each beat of the red and black heart of AC Milan, one photographer stands alone when it comes to capturing the heart and soul of the club on camera.
Giuseppe Romano, a name that has become synonymous with AC Milan football photography during the digital era, has dedicated his work to immortalising the vibrant culture of AC Milan’s fans and the electric moments that unfold within the legendary confines of the historic San Siro.
In his own words, Romano talks about his love for the Italian giants and capturing the essence of the culture of AC Milan’s loyal supporters and life at the San Siro through his photography. His dramatic photos take in everything from Scudetto celebrations at the end of the 2021/22 season, through to Champions League nights under the lights….
“I hail from Sicily, specifically from Canicattini Bagni, a charming village near Siracusa. Over the past few years, I’ve split my time between Milan, a bustling metropolis, and the tranquil beauty of Sicily.
While photography is a significant part of my life, I consider myself primarily a communicator and an artist. My journey in the realm of communication and artistry has been deeply influenced by my family’s artistic heritage.
My allegiance lies firmly with AC Milan, a passion instilled in me by my father from a young age. The club’s rich history, iconic players, and enduring spirit have captivated me since childhood.
AC Milan represents more than just a football club to me; it embodies tradition, resilience, and a sense of belonging. Supporting Milan is not merely a pastime but a way of life, woven into the fabric of my identity.
Two players stand out as my football idols: Kaka and Riquelme. Kaka’s electrifying talent, humility, and dedication on and off the field have always inspired me. Riquelme, with his sublime skill, vision, and elegance, epitomises the artistry of football, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
Football has always been more than just a sport for me; it’s a passion deeply ingrained in my upbringing and cultural heritage. Growing up in Sicily, football wasn’t just a game but a way of life, bringing communities together. My earliest memories are filled with the sights and sounds of local matches, where the passion of the fans and the drama on the pitch left an indelible mark on me. These experiences forged a deep connection to football and ignited my lifelong love for the sport and its vibrant culture.

Photography has been a natural extension of my love for football and its rich tapestry of emotions, stories, and moments. As a visual storyteller, I’m drawn to capturing the raw energy of the game, the unbridled joy of victory, and the heartbreak of defeat. Each match is a unique narrative waiting to unfold, and through my lens, I aim to immortalise the passion, dedication, and spirit of football culture. Whether it’s the jubilant celebrations of fans or the quiet intensity of players on the field, photography allows me to preserve these fleeting moments and share them with others who share the same love for the beautiful game.
I’m inspired by a diverse range of artistic movements and photographers, each contributing to my unique perspective as an artist. One of my main influences is the Futurist movement, with its dynamic portrayal of movement and energy, reflecting the essence of football in motion. I’m drawn to the Futurists’ bold use of colour, geometric shapes, and abstract compositions, which often mirror the intensity and excitement of the game.
In addition to Futurism, I’m inspired by some of the greatest street photographers of all time. Their ability to capture the raw, unfiltered moments of everyday life resonates with me deeply, informing my approach to documenting the human experience within the context of football culture. From the bustling streets outside the stadium to the intimate interactions between fans and players, I strive to emulate their candid and evocative style in my own work.
By drawing inspiration from these artistic influences, I aim to bring a fresh perspective to football photography, blending elements of movement, emotion, and storytelling to create compelling visual narratives that resonate with viewers on a deeper level.
Photographing football lifestyle and culture offers a window into the soul of the sport, revealing its universal appeal and its ability to transcend geographical boundaries and cultural differences. As a photographer, I’m captivated by the authenticity and diversity of football culture, which manifests itself in so many ways.
I’m eagerly hoping to immerse myself in the electrifying atmosphere of major sporting events like the European Championships or the Olympics, whether it’s through official assignments or finding unique angles as a freelance photographer. Alongside these aspirations, I’m also nurturing a few personal projects that delve into various aspects of football culture and human stories. Exciting times lie ahead, and I’m thrilled to embark on these creative journeys!
Viva il CALCIO! It’s not just a sport; it’s a passion, a way of life, and a source of endless inspiration. Here’s to celebrating the universal language of football and the countless stories it tells.”
