The PUMA King football boot, originally designed for the legendary Pelé in the 1970s, has an enduring legacy on and off the pitch. While Pelé set the stage for its initial fame, the King’s iconic status surged in the 1990s thanks to the boots iconic fold down tongue over the laces as both the boot and the King Indoor trainers became staples in youth football culture. This November, PUMA is reaching into its archives to revive the beloved PUMA King Indoor, with a reissue set for November 23, 2024, available at select global retailers.

First introduced in 1999, the PUMA King Indoor quickly gained a reputation for its versatility and comfort. It was more than just a piece of athletic gear – it evolved into a lifestyle shoe, embraced by young football enthusiasts for its sleek design and adaptability. The King Indoor moved beyond street cages and indoor courts to become a cultural touchstone, representing individuality and style across Europe, from the UK’s urban playgrounds to the piazzas of Italy.

The shoe’s broad appeal didn’t stop there. The King Indoor caught the eye of renowned German designer Jil Sander, who infused her minimal-chic sensibilities into a collaborative version of the silhouette, blending fashion with heritage and marking one of the earliest sport-fashion crossovers. Despite its popularity, production of the King Indoor was halted in 2015, leaving a void for fans of this timeless design.

Now, in 2024, the PUMA King Indoor is making a triumphant return. The updated edition boasts a premium stitched leather upper, a pitch-inspired lace shroud, and a classic gum outsole. Gold accents, including the “King” wordmark, lend the shoe a touch of elegance that echoes its storied past.

The campaign for this reissue is captured by renowned British photographer Ewen Spencer, celebrated for documenting youth and subcultures. Spencer’s early work immortalised the UK’s emerging music scenes in the 2000s – a period when the PUMA King Indoor was a footwear staple.

With its blend of heritage, style, and contemporary craftsmanship, the 2024 PUMA King Indoor is poised to reclaim its spot as a symbol of football culture and streetwear.
