Berlin-based photographer Jonas Berndt captured the vibrant fan culture of EURO 2024, producing a one-of-a-kind photobook titled “Suche Ticket!!” (German for “Looking for a Ticket!!”). The limited-edition book, with just 4+1 copies in existence, features photographs of football fans who flocked to Berlin during this summer’s European Championship.

The 90-page book is as unique as its subject matter – its cover is bound in artificial turf, a playful homage to the 24,000 square meters of turf laid out for public viewing events in the city. The idea was inspired by the massive crowds, both locals and visitors, who came to Berlin to soak in the tournament atmosphere, even without tickets to the actual games. “I took many photos during this time, and to give them a proper home, I decided to print a book so they wouldn’t just rot on my hard drive,” explains Berndt. “Mass events like the Euros often bring about weird occurrences. Berlin organised a public viewing in the city centre and laid out artificial turf over almost the entire area. This inspired the idea to bind the book in the same material.”

Speaking to Lower Block, Berndt recalls some of his favourite photos and moments from the tournament. “It’s hard to pick a favourite photo. One is the photo of the Scottish guy with a smoke flare in his hand, walking with the Swiss fans to the stadium after his team was eliminated (photo top of article). The other one is the huge “England” tattoo on a back that I photographed during the final in Berlin.”

“But a favourite moment from the tournament is not featured in the book. A friend invited me to the quarter-final in Berlin. Turkey played against the Netherlands. I was very happy to have the chance to experience one match from inside the stadium.”

And the fans he enjoyed photographing the most? “I’d say the English and the Dutch made it very easy for me. Because of their style and presence, I was able to take a lot of photos at their matches. But at this point it’s important to mention that I only followed the fans who visited Berlin!”

In a nod to the ticket frenzy that accompanied the Euros, the book’s final pages include screenshots of eBay listings where desperate fans attempted to buy tickets at exorbitant prices. Embracing the spirit of the times, Berndt has decided to sell the photobook on eBay, echoing the frantic marketplace that was the hallmark of this summer’s football fever.

The title, “Suche Ticket!!”, reflects the photographer’s playful take on the experience—it’s a tribute to the many fans who, despite being ticketless, still found a way to immerse themselves in the excitement of EURO 2024.
