Napoli Belongs to the People – 100 Years of SSC Napoli

Share

For a century, SSC Napoli has been inseparable from the identity of Naples. Through extraordinary triumphs, difficult years and the financial collapse of 2004, the relationship between the club and its supporters has endured.

As Napoli marks 100 years, the city’s ultras and supporters have come together to celebrate that history on their own terms.

Naples-based photographer Alessandro Cangiano was there, moving through the streets alongside the crowds to document an occasion that was as much a statement of belonging as a celebration of football.

Working entirely in black and white, Cangiano’s photographs have a raw, almost biblical quality. Banners rise over tightly packed crowds and supporters gather in scenes that feel closer to religious processions than conventional football celebrations.

Among the banners, two messages stand out.

No Business reflects the opposition of supporters to the increasing commercialisation of football. The centenary celebrations were funded by the ultras themselves, an assertion of their independence and commitment to the club.

Napoli è della gente – Napoli belongs to the people.

For Cangiano, who experienced the club’s bankruptcy in 2004 as a supporter, those sentiments carry particular weight. His photographs celebrate the enduring connection between the team, the city and the people whose lives are shaped by it.

What emerges is a portrait of a city celebrating its past while expressing something about its future.

A century after the club’s formation, the message remains unmistakable.

Napoli belongs to its people.
