Manchester United have confirmed plans to leave Old Trafford, their home for 115 years, to build a state-of-the-art 100,000-seater stadium. The new venue, expected to be the largest in the UK, will be constructed on club-owned land adjacent to the current ground as part of an ambitious regeneration project.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has long envisioned a “Wembley of the North,” leads the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force alongside former United defender Gary Neville and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham. The initiative aims to create “the world’s greatest football stadium,” which could contribute an estimated £7.3bn annually to the UK economy, generating 92,000 jobs and 17,000 homes.
Ratcliffe acknowledged that while Old Trafford has been a historic home for United, it has fallen behind the world’s best sporting arenas. The new stadium will maintain the legacy of Old Trafford while offering a cutting-edge experience for fans. However, financial concerns remain, as Ratcliffe recently revealed that without cost-saving measures, the club would have run out of money by Christmas.

Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada emphasised that the club’s goal is to have “the world’s best football team playing in the world’s best stadium.” He confirmed that extensive feasibility studies, as well as consultations with fans and local residents, led to the decision to build a new ground. Further discussions will take place to ensure the community remains involved in the process.
Legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson voiced his support for the move, stating that while Old Trafford holds special memories, United must “be brave and seize this opportunity” to build a new home where future history can be made.
The plans mark a historic shift for Manchester United, promising an exciting new chapter for the club and its supporters while raising questions about the financing of such a monumental project.
