Oasis Fans Turn Cardiff into Matchday Mayhem

Share

Before Noel and Liam Gallagher took the stage in Cardiff, the city centre looked more like a 90s matchday than a gig night. Photographer Guirec Munier captured the pre-show scenes as thousands of Oasis fans – young and old – poured into the streets, downing beers, draped in their finest clobber, and soaking up the atmosphere.

It was a sea of official merch, iconic Umbro pieces, and as you’d expect – plenty of adidas. Banners, masks of the brothers, and tattoos on display – one fan proudly showing off a West Ham United crest inked on his leg. A Liverpool shirt bearing Diogo Jota’s name stood out too, worn as a moving tribute after the footballer and his brother tragically died in a car crash days earlier.

French photographer Munier, known for his love of Brit culture and documenting football culture, caught the electric mix of music, memory, and matchday energy that defined the day.

“The best band on the planet!”

“My (love) story with Oasis began in 1994. The worship was supersonic. In a heartbeat. Definitely Maybe is the soundtrack of my conversion to the British way of life. British culture hasn’t left me since that golden era of the mid-90s. D’you know what I mean? Thirty years later, the master plan couldn’t have been clearer when the reformation was announced.

“Some might say you had to be a kidult to throw yourself headlong into the trap set by Ticketmaster on August 31st, then cross the Channel to see a concert in Cardiff, but whatever, we’re not gonna live forever, and I didn’t want to keep the bitterness in my mouth since May 2000. The Gallagher brothers were supposed to perform in Rennes, my hometown, but Noel decided otherwise by suddenly leaving the tour a few days earlier. You gotta roll with it.

“Between August 22, 2009 and July 4, 2025, 5,795 days, or 15 years, 10 months and 13 days, have passed. Almost an eternity. Little by little, as D-Day approached, the dream was finally becoming a reality. I was ready for the time shock. Cardiff was about to become the center of the universe. The rest is history, but let’s be clear for everyone: Oasis is the best band on the planet. It’s a fact. And that is it. End of the story. And what a story! F*cking biblical mate!”
