A new documentary, ULTRAS, offers a direct and immersive look into one of football’s most intense and misunderstood subcultures. Directed by Swedish filmmaker Ragnhild Ekner and produced by Tobias Janson, the film steps inside the world of ultras – supporters who live and breathe their clubs with unmatched commitment.

A visually intoxicating spectacle of collective passion..
Nordic Watchlist
Ultras are often described as the game’s “12th player.” Their influence stretches beyond the stands, shaping atmosphere, identity, and even politics. While frequently seen as a challenge for authorities, their presence also reflects something deeper: a global culture built on loyalty, expression, and belonging.
Rather than critique, ULTRAS takes a celebratory approach. Ekner’s camera travels across four continents and eight countries, capturing the scale and diversity of fan culture – from Argentina and Indonesia to Morocco, Egypt, and across Europe. The film documents supporters of clubs such as Nueva Chicago, PSS Sleman, and Eastbourne Town, presenting a unified thread of passion despite cultural differences.

The focus stays firmly on the positive force of fandom. This is not a story about hooliganism. It is about choreography, tifos, relentless chanting, and collective identity. One standout sequence at Indonesian side PSS Sleman shows young supporters singing in unison, creating an atmosphere closer to a choir than a crowd – disciplined, emotional, and powerful.

Ekner, herself a lifelong IFK Göteborg supporter, approaches the subject from within. Her perspective is personal but controlled, allowing the voices and rituals of ultras to speak for themselves. As she puts it:
“In a way, football is not important… but it’s also f***ing important, if you know what I mean.”
Visually, the film leans into colour, movement, and scale. Critics have noted its intensity, with Little White Lies calling it “a compelling exploration of a subculture… with intoxicating visuals.”
