adidas and Manchester United have teamed up to launch a new apparel collection that pays homage to one of the club’s greatest legends – George Best. The adidas x MUFC x George Best collection draws design inspiration from United’s historic 1967/68 European Cup-winning season, a time when Best was at the peak of his career, and the club claimed their first continental trophy.
At the heart of the collection is a retro aesthetic that captures the essence of that era. The campaign itself is a tribute to the past, shot on film by Hollywood actor and United fan Gary Oldman, using a vintage Chamonix camera to add an authentic 1960s feel.
The collection takes fans back to Manchester United’s famous 4-1 victory over Benfica in the 1968 European Cup final, where the team wore long-sleeved blue jerseys. These jerseys, donned by the likes of George Best, served as the design foundation for the modern collection.
Fast forward 56 years, and the new range reflects this iconic moment with a sleek and stylish interpretation of that era’s look. The apparel lineup includes a jersey, track pants, and a track top – all painted in the same striking blue as the 1967/68 kits.
The standout piece of the collection is undoubtedly the retro-inspired jersey. Designed to echo the one worn in the 1968 final, it features the 1967/68 City of Manchester coat of arms, which harks back to one of the club’s most glorious periods. The number seven is boldly printed on the back, a nod to George Best’s legendary squad number, and an embroidered version of his signature is subtly placed on the left cuff.
Beyond the jersey, the collection also offers a streetwear-inspired tracksuit that merges football heritage with contemporary fashion. The track top has a fold-down collar and ribbed cuffs, maintaining a classic football style, while the matching slim-fit track pants provide a modern, urban twist. Both pieces prominently display the City of Manchester coat of arms, the adidas trefoil logo, and the iconic number seven. The track top also features Best’s embroidered signature on the cuff.
The launch of the collection was star-studded, featuring current United players Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, Mason Mount, and Ethan Wheatley, alongside club legends Andy Cole and Bryan Robson – who himself wore the famous number seven jersey. They appeared in the campaign’s vintage-styled shots, further enhancing the nostalgic feel that runs through the collection.
George Best made his United debut at just 17, in a 1963 match against West Bromwich Albion, and went on to become one of the most celebrated players in the club’s history. Known for his flair, skill, and charisma both on and off the field, Best helped Manchester United win First Division titles in 1965 and 1967, before earning the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 1968.
His legacy remains immortalised at Old Trafford, not only through this new collection but also in the form of the ‘Trinity’ statue, which stands outside the stadium, honouring Best alongside fellow United legends Sir Bobby Charlton and Denis Law.
The adidas x MUFC x George Best collection is more than just a nod to a bygone era; it’s a celebration of Manchester United’s rich history and one of the club’s most iconic figures, ensuring George Best’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
