AWAY DAYS – Following Football on the Road

Share

Following your club away has always been one of football’s great rituals.

Early starts and long journeys. Coaches, trains and motorway services. Pre-match pints in unfamiliar towns, questionable matchday food, police escorts and cramped away ends. New grounds, old rivalries and the shared feeling of being somewhere you probably wouldn’t otherwise have reason to visit.

Away Days brings together photography from across the Lower Block archive documenting travelling football supporters over more than six decades.

There are Old Firm derbies in the 1960s and the rudimentary away facilities of the 1980s. Burnley supporters travelling the lower leagues, Birmingham City lads outside Stoke’s Victoria Ground and Sheffield United fans making the journey by coach. Port Vale visit The Dell, Elm Park, Bootham Crescent and The Hawthorns during the 1990s.

Further afield, Manchester United supporters party outside De Kuip in Rotterdam ahead of the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final, while Scotland’s Tartan Army descend on Sweden for Euro 92.

There are the big occasions too. Newcastle United chasing the title at Ewood Park in 1996, Chelsea supporters at Old Trafford and Highbury, and newly crowned Premier League champions Arsenal travelling across London to Selhurst Park in 2026.

At the heart of the collection are the supporters themselves.

Scarves and flags. Pints and pies. Police horses and packed coaches. Celebration, disappointment and anticipation. The characters you meet along the way and the friendships built through years of making the same journeys together.

From European finals to lower-league Saturdays, the destination changes. The ritual remains.

Away Days brings together selected Lower Block Editions and archival prints celebrating the culture of following football on the road.
